Lonnie has spent more than 30 years writing plays that jump racial and ethnic boundaries. Premieres at Victory Gardens include The Sovereign State of Boogedy Boogedy, Lemuel, Necktie Party and Concerto Chicago. The Romance of Magno Rubio (winner of eight Obie Awards in 2003) was produced at Victory Gardens in 2004, and has gone on to be produced at the Long Wharf Theater in New Haven, CT, its seventh production in three years. These plays and others have also been performed at LaMama, E.T.C., the
American Place Theatre and Yale Repertory Theatre. Wheatley premiered at Victory Gardens in the 2005–2006 season and The Lost Boys of Sudan was presented at The Children’s Theatre in Minneapolis in 2007. Carter’s Organizing Abraham Lincoln (with Rich Klimmer) was the winner of The Two-Headed Challenge sponsored by the Playwrights’ Center and the Guthrie Theater.

Carter has taught playwriting at New York University since 1979. New York University produced his play Two Great Oceans, written with Sherry Shephard-Massat in February 2010. He is an alumnus of New Dramatists, a charter member of the VGT Playwrights’ Ensemble and an alumnus of the Playwrights’ Center in Minneapolis. He is a Guggenheim Fellow and twice a Fellow of the National Endowment for the Arts and a Jenny McKean Moore Fellow at The George Washington University. He is a graduate of Marquette and the Yale School of Drama and teaches at the New York University Tisch School of the Arts.
